Smart Home Pilot Program

Smart Plugs

The smart plugs in your Pepco Smart Home Pilot kit enable you to manage and monitor household electronics like your entertainment center, small kitchen appliances, and office equipment via the Pepco Smart Home app on your mobile device. With smart plugs, you can schedule when to turn certain appliances on and off and monitor how much energy they use. This can help identify which household appliances might be using the most energy. You also can view your energy use by day, week, month and year.

Installing Your Smart Plugs

Smart plugs are to be used indoors only. We recommend installing smart plugs on electronics and appliances that use a lot of energy, for example:

  • Dehumidifiers
  • Space heaters
  • Office electronics

Plug your electrical devices into the smart plug that you wish to control. The plug of the electrical device you wish to control should fit snugly into the smart plug. Note that you’ll need to apply additional pressure compared to plugging the smart plug into a wall outlet.

Not sure how much energy your appliance or device uses? You can use the smart plug to find out. Just plug your appliance or device into the smart plug and open Smart Plug in the Pepco Smart Home app. By pairing your appliances and devices with the smart plug, you can make them smarter and turn them on or off based on the temperature, a routine schedule or when someone is in the room.

Pairing a Smart Plug

In the app, go to Devices at the bottom of the screen Home > + > Smart Plug, then place the smart plug in pairing mode.

Step 1: Begin with the device unplugged.

Step 2: Press and hold the white button on top of the plug, while plugging it in.

Step 3: Immediately release the button after the blue status LED turns on (after about two seconds).

Step 4: Your smart plug will reset and go into pairing mode.

Once paired, the app will prompt you to set up rules for your smart plug.

Creating Custom Rules

Here are some ideas for custom rules you can set for your smart plugs:

  • If I am in “Away Mode,” then make my “Space Heater” switch off.
  • If the time is 11:00 p.m. every day, then make my “Living Room Lamp” switch off.
